Knackered Tyres Dominate California Cycling Event

I'm happy to report Dave, myself and "the honorary, guest KT rider" survived the death ride (mostly) without incident. 120+ miles of riding, 16k feet of climbing, the eating of a combined 20k calories, and the drinking of many a beer was accomplished. The festivities occurred on a sunny 90F Saturday with a nice headwind cooling us on the last climb, which turned into a tailwind on the downhill, propelling (some of) us downhill at speeds approaching the legal limit on a state highway. After about 11hours in the saddle, the ride finished at Turtle Rock, ending in a solo sprint in front of thousands of eager KT fans.

More photos here.

3 Bears On Saturday (Sign up for the ms ride!)

I have officially signed up for the MS ride and want to start training.

First training ride (for me) will be "da three bears" this Sat. I rode this morning and found that I am super out of shape so I will probably be taking it easy :-)

The ride is 35 to 40 miles from my house but has lots of climbing. Here is the route description:

http://www.calcycling.org/routes/three-bears.php

I can think of a few coffee shops to visit on our way out of Berkeley.
So my house at 9:30.

See you there!

Hey KTs! In honor of the holiday, we will be starting the Wednesday ride at 8am from Domingo Peets (same place as usual). The ride will likely be a little longer - something in the range of Redwood/Pinehurst.

See you there!

Mount Diablo Triple Climb Extravaganza

In an effort to get me ready for the Death Ride, and as a fun activity for Fathers' Day, I plan to climb mount Diablo on Sun 6/17...

...three time. That's roughly 70miles, 10,000+ ft of climbing. The temperature is likely to be a sunny 95F, so what's not to like?

If you're interested in participating, let me know. I would very much enjoy company on all three or only some of the ascents. The plan is start early, probably around 8am from the South gate of Diablo.

Stinson 10K and Half Marathon - April 14

Now that we've officially branched into trail racing, and more importantly, met Gabor's nemesis, I'm suggesting a morning of running and an afternoon of funning at Stinson. We'll begin with a nice little jaunt up and around Mt. Tam and finish with an afternoon of frolicking at the beach. All of this for just $30! And for the non-runners, bring your bikes or go for a hike while us ninnies blow out our knees.

So far Peter, Gabor and Ladybird are in! Register soon!

Get Blog Postings Sent to Your Email!

Hey KTs - so there is a (relatively) easy way to get these posting automatically posted to your email so you know there is something new to check out on the blog site. You simply subscribe to RSS or Atom feeds from the site. You can do it many ways:

If you use MS Outlook or Outlook Express, which many people do, you can download either intraVnews (http://www.intravnews.com/download.aspx) or RSSpopper (http://rsspopper.blogspot.com/2004/10/download.html). You install these and do a little setting up and then Outlook checks periodically for new posts and sends them to you in an email.

You can also add these feeds to other email readers, like Yahoo or AOL or Thunderbird. There are lots of ways to do it. And any way you do it, you can add this as the address for the feed in the appropriate place: http://knackeredtyres.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss.

If you want to know more about RSS and Atom feeds, you can go here: http://www.thoughtsonthings.com/archives/2005/02/ive_gone_rss_cr.php.

Anyway - this seems like a good way to make the blog more useful. So give it a try and get out and ride!!!

Sunday, March 4 Marin Ride

KTs,

I'm planning a Marin ride for Sunday starting at Lucas Valley Park & Ride at 9:00 am. Planned route, unless you can convince me otherwise is:

Lucas Valley - Nicasio - Wilson Hill - Chileno Valley - Tomales (for lunch) returning via Samuel Taylor/Lagunitas or Marshall wall (in reverse).

Mileage will be 50-60 depending on route.

Maybe we'll see penguins en route ... (photo courtesy of William's trip to Antarctica.) But if not, I can promise llama and sheep viewing.

Youssef

As most of you know Youssef took a bad fall on Skyline near Sibley Regional
Park on the morning of Saturday, December 2nd. He was riding to Montclair to meet another
group at about 6AM when, in the dark, he ran into a large branch that had fallen
across the road. When he fell he hit his head before he could raise his arms to
protect himself. He was helped by another cyclist and the homeowner nearby. He
spent four weeks in the hospital recovering from a brain injury, and returned
home after Christmas. He is recuperating and taking physical therapy. This
morning he drove down to Peets before the ride to say hello to the group. It was
great to see him again and we all wish him a speedy recovery. Attached are a few
photos of his bike that he recovered after leaving the hospital.

An Icy Morning

posted from Mark's email:
Everyone is OK, but it was slippery.
Mike went down pretty easy on some black ice going up Tunnel (no injuries). That opened our eyes.
We turned around at the top & went back to Domingo Peet's. On the way down it was light, so we saw all the ice we hadn't seen on the way up...scary....
At Peet's Ladybird finally called us to let us know she had gone down up around Dave's hill. (She had decided to ride on her own). Mike went and got her.
She was shivering, has a bruised leg and a small cut on her forehead, but otherwise OK.
I got chewed out when I got home for riding in this weather....We were lucky today. Let's be safe.
